Description:

For two days the delegates participate in a number of group exercises where the aim is to build Entity Models, which are sufficiently correct and complete to be used in practice. Notice that there is no focus on the group dynamics or psychology involved (this is left to other courses). For each session there is a real objective against which the group will test the model.

Each group gathers informally around its own white board, with the delegates taking it in turn to facilitate (there is no pressure on a person to take this role - some would rather just participate, and can learn just as much).

Before the course commences, each delegate will receive a set of models containing typical problems (problem models) encountered in practice. It is expected that these will have been studied before the course, because the lecturer uses them to focus each group on mistakes that appear as their model evolves.

This is a teaching technique that enables each group to find their errors with the minimum interference from the lecturer. The lecturer's main role during the group modelling is to detect modelling problems as they start to happen, to note these, and at a suitable moment (after some struggling on the part of the group), to point out the equivalent problem on the problem models, leaving the group to identify it on their model, and repair it.

Each delegate brings the manual obtained when attending the Business Modelling course (used to be called the data analysis course). The group uses the various checklists in this as the model progresses. If the manual or the checklists have been lost, they can be obtained at cost price from Mike King Courses

Objectives:
  • To enable the delegates to consolidate their knowledge and ability through supervised practice;
  • To provide further opportunity for delegates to learn from mistakes made with `real' models with a MENTOR present, thus giving them the competence they need;
  • To serve as a refresher for those who now need to apply the techniques;
  • To improve the delegates' fluency with the in-depth interpretation of entity models, particularly how the business sense of one part of a model impacts the business sense of another part;
  • To enable the delegate to handle `industrial strength' models.

Topics:
  • Some short refresher lecturers, as required;
  • Three to five modelling sessions, depending on the pace (for each session, different groups are formed);
  • Discussion of the errors made (and corrected) during the modelling sessions;
  • Discussion of DIFFERENCES between CORRECT models for the same business objective;
  • Some practical exercises in finding typical errors in models.

Audience:

Past delegates to the Data Analysis Course (now the Business Modelling Course) who would either like a refresher, or would like to become more fluent at Entity Modelling.

Prerequisites:

The workshop is only intended to be useful for people who have attended the Business Modelling Course (Data Analysis Course) given by Mike King. The delegates are expected to use the knowledge gained on the Business Modelling course to create CORRECT and COMPLETE models.

There would not be time to explain 5 days of course material to those who have not been exposed to it. However, there is time for short refresher lectures or discussions, as each session demands.

Duration:

2 days
